Indigenous Ecological Knowledge

Course Synopsis

This course will demonstrate an Indigenous methodology of engaging with their respective environments to promote the flourishing of all life. It will use Indigenous origin narratives, linguistic analysis, and contemporary case studies to articulate a cogent understanding of Indigenous relationships to the environment.
We will be using two texts, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Kimmerer and Tracks by Louise Erdrich. The rest of the readings will be on Canvas as pdf's.

Course Overview

     This course will demonstrate an Indigenous methodology of engaging with their respective environments to promote the flourishing of all life.  It will use Indigenous origin narratives, linguistic analysis, and contemporary case studies to articulate a cogent understanding of Indigenous relationships to the environment.  

Course Objectives

1) The students will develop an understanding of an Indigenous Methodological lens and be able to analyze the use of Indigenous languages in relationship to their respective environments.  

2) The students will be able to identify four basic components of worldview and connect these logics with Indigenous cultural components of origin narratives and contemporary issues in Indigenous communities.

3) The students will be able to analyze the role of space (place) in the relationship to the environment.
