Research Literacy for Chaplains

Grades

Greetings! In Module 1 I provide a video with more details about the course.

Required textbook: None. Required readings and videos will be provided on the  Instruction pages for each module.

Graded Work

The content in this course includes development of knowledge and skills that will be evaluated by multiple choice, matching, and True/False quiz questions. You will have short graded quizzes in Modules 2, 3 and 4. You will have two attempts to complete each quiz.  Incorrect responses to quiz questions on the first attempt will result in information that helps you learn, so you can improve your score on the second attempt. Your highest score will count toward your final grade in the course. Module 4 also includes a longer graded assessment that reviews all course content.

In Module 3, you will demonstrate the ability to critique a research article.

In Module 4, you will critique and present (via Discussion forum) an article relevant to chaplaincy practice.

We will also evaluate knowledge and attitudes using graded discussion forums in which we reflect on course content and its application to chaplaincy practice.

Course Grade

Discussion forums (1/Module, 30-50 points each): 180 points total, 30% of final course grade

Quizzes (5 total, Modules 2-4): 110 points total, 25% of final course grade

Individual assignments (Modules 3 and 4, 100 points each): 200 total points, 30% of final course grade

Final assessment (Module 4): 40 points, 15% of final course grade

Optional Zooms

We have 3 opportunities to connect by Zoom this quarter. Join me any time during 4:00-5:15 p.m. MST on September 22, October 13 and November 3. I'll answer questions, but we will not cover any new content in these sessions. You will find Zoom links in Modules 2, 3, and 4.

Checklist

This course  meets MAPSC degree course learning goals in research literacy and evidence-based spiritual care. 

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Articulate why research literacy is important for chaplains

2. Explain how spirituality and religion are approached in research literature

3. Define basic statistics terms and concepts

4. Conduct a literature search of peer-reviewed journal articles relevant to chaplaincy practice

5. Identify common types of research studies and typical components of research reports

6. Critically evaluate research studies

Incompletes are not allowed in this course.

Pass/Fail grading is not allowed in this course.

Late Work: Timely submissions are critical for community learning. Notify the instructor if you have an emergency. The instructor will only consider arrangements to submit late work without penalty in rare instances. Otherwise these late penalties account for common circumstances that result in late submissions (e.g., sickness, work demands, travel):

<24 hours late: 10% penalty

24-48 hours late: 20% penalty

48 hours - 1 week late: 40%

> 1 week late: 0 points
