Course Description

A praxis course is designed to provide experiential education in the practices of ministry that Iliff students are likely to engage in their professional lives. They are an occasion to work on the integration of theology, theory and practice in a specific area of ministry. In this case, the ministry is weddings and preparations for healthy & fulfilling marriages. In this praxis, we hope to engage actual practices of ministry involved in accompanying persons making plans for marriage such as meeting with the couple for marital preparation and coaching; facilitating family relationships, planning and conducting wedding ceremonies; while honoring the ritual(s) of your tradition, theology and values.

In this course, it is our goal to encourage you to reflect upon your theology of marriage; and what you believe is the purpose of the wedding and the wedding process. We will be making use of a variety of learning styles including readings, online and in-person discussion; field research and role play in order to allow participants to have embodied experiences with weddings and premarital counseling. It will be important for all wedding praxis participants to engage in the full range of learning styles.

Your successful completion of this Weddings Praxis Seminar depends on your engaged participation and completing the advanced and post assignments.

NOTE of CAUTION: In the past, the weddings praxis has brought up memories of many experiences in the lives of students and instructors; and the weddings and marriages of friends and loved ones. Therefore, please be aware that the discussions and role playing may elicit similar connections to your own her/histories, and thus may have a strong emotional impact on you. We encourage you to plan accordingly and be sure that you have space and/or companionship to process during your preparation time; and the actual class time on Friday and Saturday, February 13 th and 14 th .

The praxis is graded pass/fail. In order to receive a passing grade students are required to:

In order to earn a Pass, students must perform at a level considered the equivalent of C or better. The Pass/Fail grade cannot be changed to a letter grade later.
