IST2090-1OL-FA15 - Storytelling & Narrative Justice

Notes from Instructor: August 5, 2015

1) This syllabus is still under construction. I am still shifting around some of the course content, and updating links and assignments. I am still adding the weekly reading viewing materials (Week One is done), but the required texts are fixed (see link below). I will also be adding some instructional videos to orient you to the course and course materials. The basic course outline as it stands on this home page is accurate.

2) You are going to need a portable digital recording device for this course. Any smartphone will suffice. But if you do not have a smartphone or handheld digital video recorder, you may find it difficult to participate in the course. Conceivably, if you can record yourself into YouTube through your laptop webcam, you may be able to perform the majority of assignments for the course, but something handheld is going to serve you better for certain assignments. In addition, the internal recording functions of CANVAS are very temperamental and low-quality, so I do not recommend them.

PLEASE WATCH THE FOLLOWING VIDEO (17:01) TO ORIENT YOU TO THE NATURE OF THE COURSE AND PRACTICAL MATTERS THAT COME UP EARLY IN THE COURSE.

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course explores how justice might be defined, sought, motivated and made through the use of storytelling and narrative forms of various types. Using meditative exercises, written essays and video and/or digital narrative means, students will examine others’ stories and narratives of justice-seeking-and-making and create and examine their own.
